Designing the Systems behind the first Live Broadcast of the Entire Women’s Big Bash League

A systems driven live production project that transformed a small crew proof of concept into the operational foundation for broadcasting the Women’s Big Bash League nationwide.

Client: Cricket Australia

Delivery Partner: BarTV Sports

Role: Major Projects Coordinator and Lead Producer

Format: Live Broadcast to Cricket.com.au

The brief

Cricket Australia’s ambition was to live stream the entire Women’s Big Bash League nationally. At the time, this scale of live production across multiple venues and states had not been achieved for the competition.

Before committing to a full season, a proof of concept was required. The South Africa A v Australia A Test series was used as a live environment to test, refine, and systemise broadcast operations that could later be scaled across the Women’s Big Bash League.

The challenge

Delivering a national live broadcast required more than technical capability. It required systems that could be replicated across multiple venues, often with different crews operating at the same time.

Without standardised processes, production quality would vary, onboarding would be slow, and scaling to a full season would carry significant risk.

The approach

I led production on the South Africa A v Australia A Test series with a small crew, treating the tour as a live testing ground for systems design.

Over a three month period, I developed and refined standard operating procedures for cricket broadcasts. These included camera placement standards, setup and pack down guides, directing workflows, and switching protocols. Each system was designed to be practical, repeatable, and adaptable across different venues.

By documenting best practice and embedding it into daily workflows, the production became less reliant on individual experience. These systems were tested under live conditions, refined between matches, and prepared for national scale.

The outcome

The success of the South Africa A test series provided the operational confidence required to scale production.

The systems developed during the tour were then used to live stream the entire Women’s Big Bash League, marking the first season of the competition to be broadcast live at this scale.

More than 20 outdoor broadcasts were delivered across Australia, often with multiple crews operating concurrently across different states. Production quality was consistent, and the broadcasts contributed to increased visibility and professionalism of women’s cricket nationwide.

Lasting impact

The success of the Women’s Big Bash League broadcasts represented an important moment for women’s sport in Australia. Being able to play a small role in increasing visibility, access, and professionalism for women’s cricket was a genuine privilege.

From an operational perspective, the systems developed through this project continued to underpin future cricket broadcasts, enabling scale without compromising quality. More broadly, the experience reinforced my belief that strong systems are what allow meaningful work to reach wider audiences.
